The Longest War Resolution

Obama has vowed to give Syria a controlled shock and awe, to be modest in how he sends Assad a message. Obama maintains that he has the power to start and make war, powers that Lincoln also believed he had. However, he has decided to consult Congress, and he has handed them a resolution with 172 words.

Not only does Obama claim that he has the same powers that Lincoln had, but to rub it off he hands Congress 172 words. Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft's copy of The Gettysburg Address is 271 words long. The number 1-7-2 supposedly appears in the back of the five dollar bill, at the bottom of the Lincoln Memorial, but I couldn't find it, not even using a high-resolution image. There is no order in chaos, but there is chaos and we on the internet want to find the order.

Is there order? Perhaps not, but George Bancroft was a man who brought order to the international arena. Bancroft is famous for the Bancroft Treaties, which were mainly designed to prevent individuals from using naturalization as a way to skip military service and other legal obligations in their home countries. Naturalization of the 11 million undocumented immigrants in this country is something that Obama also believes he can do with the stroke of a pen, as he did in preventing deportations for people who qualified for the Dream Act; "he could try to extend it to domestic-violence victims, say. Or to workers who are bringing civil rights or labor-violation claims. Or to those with disabled children." Not only can Obama make and start war in the spirit of Lincoln, he can also normalize the legal status or certain immigrants.

Lincoln wrote: "we now practically read it 'all men are created equal, except negroes.' When the Know-Nothings [a nativist political party] get control, it will read 'all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics.' When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty—to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocracy [sic]." It seems that things haven't changed much since the days of Lincoln in terms of the president's views on Russia, but maybe Obama sees undocumented immigrants as the new slaves.

Lincoln believed that the Constitution related to immigrants: "that they have a right to claim it as though they were blood of the blood, and flesh of the flesh, of the men who wrote that Declaration." If civil war is coming to America, it will be to free the undocumented immigrants.
